Sanctuary
Part One
Chapter 01
"Brian -- hey. Brian."
A sigh.
"God damnit, Brian, snap out of it."
He looked up from the desk to his coworker, who was looking just a bit sour.
"God, finally." the other man said.
Brian quickly apologized, grabbing a stack of papers on his desk, and straightening them. It wasn't the first time he'd zoned out, just the first that it'd gotten so bad that he couldn't hear his coworker.
"What do you think about all the time?" the other man asked curiously.
Brian paused. "I don't know." he admitted. He really didn't.
A raised eyebrow was his response. "Have you been getting enough sleep?"
Too much. Brian nodded. The other man studied him for a moment, before setting a pack of papers on the desk.
"Harry wants these filed." he said.
Brian nodded, pretending like he was going to start on that immediately, but as soon as his coworker had disappeared, he rolled his eyes and gave a sigh. He put his head down on the desk, his head turned so that he was laying on his left cheek. He grabbed a pen of his that was sitting on top of a different packet of papers -- there were too many papers.
This needs to stop, he thought to himself. I've become obsessed.
He couldn't stop thinking about the ocean, the warm breeze, the green eyes. They were more prominent in his mind's eye that day than they were any other day, and he couldn't explain why.
He suddenly realized he was drawing mindlessly on the top sheet of the packet, and he sat up quickly.
"Shit." he cursed to himself, dropping the pen -- he'd needed that paper, and all he'd drawn on the bottom were long wavy lines, some spaced further apart from each other than others.
He studied it for a moment, realizing what it was -- the ocean. He shook his head, flipped the packet over so he wouldn't have to look at it anymore, and grabbed the phone at his desk. Time to schedule a meeting with the family shrink.

"Val, you know you don't have to wait here with me."
The blonde shrugged, leaning against the lamp post they were standing near outside the 7-11.
"I know I don't have to." she said. "Just want to make sure you're alright."
"I've been doing this for four years." Zack said, "I think I'm fine."
Valary sighed and looked around. "He's late." she said. "Are you sure you two agreed on this place?"
He smirked. "Yes, Valary." he said.
She grinned, and looked down. Then she nodded her head at a black BMW parked at the curb.
"Who do you think owns that?" she asked.
Zack grinned, he loved this game. "Hmm," he said, "No bumper stickers -- an anal buisness man, married with one kid. But he's having an affair with his secretary, and he stopped here to pick up her favorite kind of cigarettes -- he's meeting her at the hotel down the street."
Valary grinned. "Your guys are always having affairs." she said.
"Well all yours are always gay." Zack countered, he paused. "Kinda think it should be the other way around." He grinned when Valary laughed, and he looked back at the 7-11. "Man, I need something to drink -- I'll be back."
She nodded, and he started towards the store. He turned to her to say something, and all but ran into someone coming out.
"Sorry." he said, quickly spinning.
He froze, as did the guy he'd run into. The stranger was dressed in casual black pants and a loose fitting black button up shirt -- unbuttoned with a wifebeater showing from beneath it. His dark hair was longish, almost naturally highlighted. But his eyes were what made Zack stop like a deer in the headlights; a warm shade of brown that he'd seen before.
"Sorry." he repeated.
"Nah, it was my fault." the stranger said quickly, and he held up the orange soda he was holding in one hand. "Was reading the label...I'm sorry."
Zack nodded, and the two studied each other for a moment. Zack offered him the best smile he could put on his face, before starting around him.
"Uh, I'm Brian." the other man said suddenly, stopping him.
"Zack." the slightly shorter man said, more than glad to have an excuse to talk to this man.
"Are you..." Brian smirked, looking away and as if he couldn't believe what he was going to ask. "Are you hungry?"
Zack thought for a moment, before he mirrored the smirk. "Are you offering?" he asked.
Brian grinned, and Zack noted how perfect his teeth were.
"Sure thing." he said.
The two were unable to speak anymore, just stare at each other some more. Brian finally gestured to the BMW.
"Shall we?" he asked.
Zack nodded, unable to find it in him to form words, and the taller man started towards the car. Zack followed, but glanced at Valary who was questioning him with her gaze.
"Excuse me." he said to Brian, before nearing her.
"What are you doing?" she asked, tone a whisper as though Brian was trying to listen in.
Zacky grinned, and suddenly felt a rush of excitement in his gut, a tidal wave of sorts. "Val -- he has the eyes." he said.
As if on cue, they both glanced at Brian who was standing next to the BMW, holding open the passenger door with one hand, as he took a drink of the orange soda with his other. He looked far from any knight in shining armor to Valary, but whatever floats his boat, she guessed.
"You're sure?" she asked, looking back at him.
My sanctuary...my sanctuary...
"Positive." he answered.
She smirked. "You were wrong." she said.
Zack smirked. "He looks like a business man, doesn't he?" He asked.
"Be careful." she said.
"You too." he said. "Go home, don't tell Matt I went off with another guy."
"Of course not." she said. Zack grinned at her again, before turning and heading back to the car. As he neared the BMW, he locked gazes with Brian's again, and the two smiled. Ecstatic butterflies erupted in his stomach; he felt like he hadn't felt in a long while.
"This is weird." Brian said softly.
Zack nodded, but didn't know what to say, so he slipped into the passenger seat. Brian shut the door, and he glanced up at the blonde who'd been with Zack. She smiled at him, a knowing smile which he immediately returned before walking around the car.
As Brian drove, he stole a glance at Zack who was watching out the window. He'd know those green eyes anywhere, and finally after at least three weeks of his restless dreams, he'd found them.
"Have we met?" Zack asked suddenly, turning to him. "Maybe a while ago?"
Brian smiled. "Feels that way," he said. "Doesn't it?"
~x~
Brian shut his car door again; he and Zack had just eaten a late dinner at a small Chinese place (the smaller man had been quite the sight in his leather pants and way too small black tank), and now Brian was getting ready to take him home -- or wherever he wanted to go now.
"Where do you live?" he asked, turning down the radio.
Zack paused, slowly glancing at Brian. He hated to admit how comfortable he felt with the taller man, how happy he felt. He never wanted to go back to the life he'd been living.
"Take me to your place." he said softly.
Brian turned to him, studying him for a moment. There was a plea in the jade eyes that had left an imprint in his mind ever since the first time he'd dreamed about them.
"Of course." he said, then he quickly added. "I mean, yeah -- sure. Why not?"
A sudden vibration in his pocket told him his cell was ringing, and he pulled it out, glancing at the caller i.d. -- Michelle; his girlfriend. He glanced at Zack who raised an eyebrow. Brian tossed the phone over his shoulder into the backseat, letting out by far one of the most nerdy laughs he'd ever had. Zack smiled but said nothing, turning to look ahead of him.
Brian flushed slightly, wanting to slap himself. He'd nearly stumbled over himself at the restaurant, and he didn't even know why. Normally he was cool, he was casual -- he was Rico Suave. His brow furrowed, and he made a mental note to never compare himself to Rico again.
"Here we go." he said, glad that they'd reached his apartment complex, he'd been getting sick of the awkwardness.
He led the other man into the building, and as Zacky walked down the hall towards Brian's room, he took a deep breath. What was he doing? Was he making a mistake?
Brian glanced at him as he was unlocking his door, and he smiled. Zack felt the corners of his own lips turn up -- mistake was far from what he was doing.
This is all I have time for.
